Sony has implemented a lottery system for purchasing the PlayStation 5 Pro in Japan to combat scalpers and manage high demand. The company cites a global memory chip shortage driven by the AI boom and increased interest ahead of the upcoming GTA 6 release as primary factors for the current supply constraints.
To qualify for the lottery, applicants must hold a local Japanese PSN account. Additionally, participants are required to have at least 60 hours of recorded gameplay on either PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 consoles over the past two years. These measures aim to prioritize genuine local users over tourists and resellers.
The application process for the lottery begins on October 7, with official console sales scheduled to commence on October 26. If the number of applications exceeds the available inventory, winners will be selected at random. Successful candidates must complete their purchase by November 2.
