Enthusiast DiscoStarslayer has completed the reverse engineering of the CXP102064 MechaCon chip, which was integrated into the original Sony PlayStation 2 console released in 1999. The research process spanned four years and involved chemical decapping of the chip, microscopic analysis, and optical data reading techniques.
The MechaCon chip managed the optical drive mechanics and flash memory, while also handling the MagicGate memory card technology and the decryption of KELF executable files. During the analysis, the researcher identified a vulnerability that allowed for the software-based extraction of data from the chip.
This breakthrough is expected to assist in the preservation, repair, and emulation of legacy hardware. Beyond the home console, the MechaCon chip was utilized in arcade systems based on the PlayStation 2 architecture, including Namco System 246, System 256, and Konami Python 1.
