Sony and Universal Music Group have initiated a new lawsuit against the AI music startup Suno. The plaintiffs allege that the company's latest v6 model continues to violate copyright protections by utilizing data derived from previous iterations of the software.
The labels contend that Suno employed a process described as model laundering. According to the complaint, the v6 model was trained on outputs generated by earlier versions, which were allegedly built using unlicensed music sourced from platforms like YouTube.
Sony and UMG further claim that Suno utilized distillation techniques to train the new model to replicate results from its predecessor. The plaintiffs argue that this approach ensures the new system retains the benefits of unauthorized data usage.
Suno representative Jack Brody previously stated that the v6 model was developed using a new dataset, including user-generated content. However, the company has not provided specific details regarding the composition of this training data.
