Sonos has introduced the Sonos 27 audio system update, distributed via the Apple App Store and provided free of charge for the S2 series products. The update coincides with the launch of the Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar and Sonos Ace Ultra headphones.
The company is introducing the Sonos 27mcp through early access, which utilizes the Model Context Protocol to integrate external AI models such as ChatGPT and Claude. This allows users to adjust playback and sound controls directly within the AI platforms without switching to the Sonos app, hosted at mcp.ws.sonos.com/mcp.
Sonos plans to launch the Sonos 27voice early access version by late autumn 2026. This internally developed assistant will be able to understand song clues, emotional descriptions, and device control requests, enabling users to find music based on descriptions even if they forget the name of the song or artist.
The company also announced plans for Sonos Custom Agents by 2027, which will allow users to create their own AI agents with specific models, personalities, and voices. Additionally, the new Portable Surrounds feature allows two identical portable speakers to be paired with a compatible soundbar to act as rear surround sound channels.
The updated Sonos app has a redesigned navigation interface with swipe gestures and room pinning. The Headphone Linking feature, currently in early access, allows Ace Ultra headphones to transfer audio between nearby speakers and headphones without using a phone as an intermediary device.
