A solo developer under the GitHub username storytol has released a suite of open-source, free alternatives to Adobe software, including tools for photo and video editing. The programs were written in the Rust programming language with the assistance of the Claude AI model.
The project includes replacements for Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, After Effects, and InDesign. As of early October 2026, the software is in beta, with Photocraft version 0.3.0 released on October 7 and Filmcraft version 0.2.0 on October 6.
The developer provides builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. Windows users can access portable versions that run from USB drives, while Linux versions are available in deb and rpm formats.
The software is noted for its small file size; for instance, the 64-bit Windows version of Photocraft is approximately 62 MB. The developer claims no Adobe source code was used, though the interfaces are designed to resemble the original Adobe applications.
The project has faced mixed reactions from the community, with some users raising concerns about potential security vulnerabilities due to the use of AI in coding. Additionally, some Reddit threads containing links to the project have been removed.
