SoftBank Group has secured a loan of $11.87 billion to increase its investment in OpenAI. This amount exceeds the company's initial target of $10 billion by nearly 20%. The move is part of a strategy to inject capital into the AI developer without liquidating existing assets.

As of early 2026, SoftBank has committed approximately $64.6 billion to OpenAI, securing a 13% stake. In March 2026, the firm obtained a $40 billion bridge loan, with $30 billion directed toward a funding round that valued OpenAI at $730 billion pre-money.

The total funding round reached $110 billion. By August 2026, SoftBank added a $10 billion margin loan backed by its OpenAI shares, involving lenders such as Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan. The company also plans to prepay $25.9 billion of its bridge loan balance on September 15, 2026.

SoftBank currently holds a BB+ credit rating, placing it one notch below investment grade. The margin loan includes valuation covenants, which could force repayment or asset sales if OpenAI's valuation drops significantly. Beyond equity, SoftBank is participating in the Stargate AI infrastructure project.
