SoFi Technologies has introduced a new product, SoFi Earn (SOFIE), which offers interest-bearing tokenized deposits. Users can earn a 4.40% APY on digital dollars while maintaining liquidity for cryptocurrency purchases and blockchain-based transfers.
The deposits are backed by FDIC insurance up to standard limits and allow for conversion into SoFiUSD at a 1:1 ratio. This initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to expand its digital asset offerings and develop its regulated banking and blockchain infrastructure.
Varun Datta, CEO of Truth Ventures, suggests that this move intensifies competition between traditional banks and stablecoin issuers. He notes that banks possess advantages such as deposit protection and established customer relationships, though users must distinguish between the protections offered by bank deposits and stablecoins.
Datta emphasizes that yield alone is insufficient for widespread payments adoption. He argues that the industry requires lower costs, reliable transfer mechanisms, and practical spending options. Future success for startups in this space will depend on solving operational challenges and creating sustainable revenue models.
