The Russian company Smart Engines has developed a portable 3D X-ray tomography prototype weighing under 5 kg. The device fits into a suitcase and eliminates the need for traditional mechanical positioning systems, allowing for free-positioning scanning.
The system utilizes the proprietary X-SLAM technology, which integrates computer vision, tomography, and artificial intelligence. Operators manually move the X-ray source around the object, and the software reconstructs a 3D model from just 10–15 images.
This approach significantly reduces radiation exposure, which the company claims is comparable to the natural background radiation received in Moscow over a single day. The system requires approximately 100 times fewer projections than standard CT scanners.
The hardware is based on certified X-ray equipment from the St. Petersburg-based firm ELTECH-MED. Smart Engines invested $5 million of its own funds into the project without seeking external financing.
The core technology is protected by a Russian patent, and the company has filed a patent application in the United States. The prototype is currently undergoing testing in medical and veterinary facilities for potential use in field conditions and ambulances.
