SK Hynix and Intel are currently in discussions regarding a potential collaboration in memory chip manufacturing. Should the companies reach an agreement, it would mark the first time SK Hynix establishes front-end memory chip production facilities within the United States.
The current negotiations remain in an exploratory phase, with no concrete decisions finalized. Potential strategies under consideration include SK Hynix leasing space at Intel’s Ohio manufacturing site or the formation of a joint venture involving cloud service providers to support memory chip demand.
SK Hynix currently lacks front-end wafer fabrication plants in the US, as its previous acquisition of Intel’s NAND and SSD business, now known as Solidigm, did not include such assets. The company’s existing facility in Indiana is limited to back-end semiconductor operations.
Any move to manufacture memory chips in the US would be subject to rigorous review by the South Korean government under the Industrial Technology Protection Act. Both companies have stated that while they are exploring various strategic measures, no final plans have been confirmed.
