Shopify has launched Canvas, a new site-building tool that allows merchants to create and customize online stores through a chat interface. The system utilizes the company's existing AI agent, Sidekick, to interpret user requests and modify the store's structure, logic, and design directly.

Unlike previous no-code builders that relied on rearranging modular sections or manual coding, Canvas renders the actual store code in real time. This allows users to test interactivity, view animations, and check responsiveness across different screen sizes while the AI updates the site files.

Sidekick now has direct access to theme files, which have been simplified to improve AI compatibility. The agent can also capture screenshots of the work to maintain visual context during the editing process. Merchants retain the ability to manually adjust individual elements if they prefer.

The introduction of Canvas aligns Shopify with other platforms offering AI-powered site creation, such as Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer. While the product is in its early stages, it aims to reduce the need for professional developers and coding knowledge for online sellers.
