Shopify has integrated WebMCP support across all Liquid storefronts and the Hydrogen developer preview. This update, launched on August 5, allows AI agents to interact directly with online stores using structured commands instead of traditional screen-scraping methods.
The new tools enable agents to perform tasks such as searching product catalogs, managing shopping carts, applying discount codes, and updating shipping details. These functions are available to all Shopify merchants automatically without requiring additional configuration or code.
Security measures prevent AI agents from accessing or inputting payment credentials. Finalizing any transaction requires explicit consent from the human user. The system is currently part of a Chrome origin trial, limiting its functionality to Chromium-based browsers.
Google and Microsoft have expressed support for the WebMCP standard. Shopify built this functionality upon its existing MCP and UCP protocols, extending current security frameworks to accommodate agent-driven interactions.
