Shopify is expanding its agentic commerce capabilities by allowing a broader range of AI agents to browse and purchase products from its catalog. This update grants various AI tools access to over one billion listings, which include items both on and off Shopify storefronts.
Previously, Shopify limited such functionality to specific partnerships, such as the September integration with Meta’s Muse agent. Now, users can configure any AI agent to act on their behalf without requiring a pre-existing partnership between the platform and the AI developer.
To enable this, customers link their chosen AI agent to their account on Shop, the company’s platform for order management and package tracking. The checkout process utilizes the existing one-click Shop Pay feature, allowing transactions to occur directly within the agent’s conversation interface.
Shopify positions this tool as a personal shopper that operates under specific user-defined constraints. Customers can set budget limits or filter for products with fast shipping options. For security, the system requires human approval for every individual purchase made through an agent.
