Severstal has developed and implemented a proprietary edge quality control system, ELIS, at the Cherepovets Steel Mill. The project replaces the EdgeMon system from Primetals Technologies, which had been in use since 2015. The new solution is part of a broader digital quality management system, with total investments reaching 2 ₽ billion.

ELIS utilizes computer vision and neural networks to automatically detect and classify over 20 types of defects, including edge tears and burrs. The model was trained on a dataset of over 4,000 images. The system monitors both edges of the strip at speeds up to 6 meters per second, processing video at 120 frames per second per camera.

The system is integrated with the Sherlock auto-certification platform and provides real-time monitoring. Over the past seven months, the system has operated without any hardware or software failures. Severstal-infocom is now offering ELIS, along with other inspection solutions like VERA and SIP, to external customers in the automotive, appliance, and pipe industries.

The transition from manual video monitoring to automated inspection allows for the creation of digital quality passports for products. The architecture of the ELIS system is designed to be scalable and adaptable for implementation on other production units within the company.
