Scott Bessent, the US Treasury Secretary, is reportedly being considered for the role of President Donald Trump’s artificial intelligence czar. While sources indicate discussions are underway, no final decision has been reached, and the Treasury Department has not provided an official comment on the matter.

Bessent is already involved in AI diplomacy, having recently led risk discussions with China in New York. The US proposal includes an AI safety notification system and a bilateral dialogue focused on national security. These talks preceded the summit between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Treasury Secretary currently holds multiple responsibilities, including leading trade policy reforms, negotiating critical mineral deals for Ukraine, and serving as the acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. His department is also managing sanctions efforts against Iran.

Market volatility adds complexity to these potential additional duties. The 10-year Treasury yield recently reached a 19-year high of 5.04% before retreating to 4.95%. Analysts offer varying forecasts, with projections for the year-end yield ranging from 4.65% to 6%.
