Scania has introduced a new battery mounting solution for its electric trucks, placing battery packs behind the cab. This configuration allows for the installation of two MP20 battery packs, which increases the total battery capacity and enables a driving range of up to 720 kilometers.
The new design is intended for European long-haul operations, maintaining operational flexibility for 6x2*4 tractor-trailer combinations. The system works in tandem with Scania’s IVD front, an aerodynamically optimized truck front that extends slightly forward, allowing for the additional battery placement even when the vehicle length exceeds 16.5 meters.
According to the manufacturer, the combination of the new battery arrangement and the IVD front can reduce energy consumption by up to three percent, depending on the specific application and equipment. This improvement is attributed to the reduced air resistance, which is a significant factor in the energy usage of electric heavy-duty vehicles.
This development follows Scania’s announcement in May regarding the expansion of its maximum battery configuration from six to seven packs. These battery packs are produced by MAN in Nuremberg, as both Scania and MAN operate as sister companies under the Traton Group. The 720-kilometer range figure is consistent with the specifications recently announced by MAN for its eTGX electric flagship model.
