SAP has announced the general availability of its Autonomous Enterprise architecture and the Joule Work and Desktop tools, starting in October 2026. This release marks a shift toward an agentic work layer that operates across both SAP and non-SAP applications, rather than being confined to individual software modules.

The updated Joule platform now functions as a full-screen conversational interface. It is designed to aggregate data from various enterprise systems, such as ERP, procurement, and travel management, to provide unified business answers. Users retain control through governance and auditability features, treating agents as managed entities within the system.

SAP is deploying specialized agents for finance, supply chain, workforce, and customer experience. The company emphasizes that its approach leverages structured knowledge graphs to organize enterprise data, distinguishing its capabilities from general-purpose AI models provided by companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The commercial model for these autonomous capabilities is primarily consumption-based. Customers will be charged based on agent inference units, with SAP providing transparency tools to track usage. The new features are currently accessible for preview through the SAP Discovery Center.
