Samsung has launched a social media campaign targeting Apple following the release of the iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable smartphone. Samsung's official channels criticized the device, suggesting that Apple is late to the foldable market and labeling the product as unoriginal.
The critique focused on hardware specifications, specifically weight and thickness. The iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams with an unfolded thickness of 5.3 millimeters. In comparison, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8, released this summer, weighs 201 grams and measures 4.5 millimeters in thickness.
Samsung highlighted that the iPhone Duo is 53 grams heavier than its own flagship model. The company positioned the Galaxy Z Fold8 as the world's lightest and thinnest large-format foldable device, contrasting its engineering with the design of Apple's new hardware.
The marketing campaign also included a failed attempt at a collaborative jab with the language learning app Duolingo. The app's official account publicly rejected Samsung's overtures, calling the company an ugly stranger, which added a layer of public controversy to the brand rivalry.
Samsung has a history of using Apple's major product launches for aggressive marketing, previously mocking the removal of headphone jacks and chargers. Despite market predictions that Apple's entry would challenge Samsung's dominance, the company remains focused on defending its position.
