A recent firmware update from Samsung has caused significant malfunctions in several refrigerator models. Users reported that their appliances stopped functioning, with features like auto-open and internal lighting failing, leading to rising temperatures inside the units.

The technical failure occurred shortly before the Chuseok holiday, a three-day festival in South Korea scheduled for September 24–26. Many customers faced delays in repair services, with some technicians unable to visit until October 1 or October 7.

Affected users reported substantial food spoilage, with one consumer noting the loss of 20 kilograms of food. Samsung acknowledged the issue and committed to restoring all affected refrigerators by September 24, while also deploying emergency on-site service teams.

The company is currently reviewing potential compensation for the spoiled food. This incident follows Samsung's 2023 announcement regarding plans to integrate AI chips into its home appliance lineup to improve efficiency and functionality.
