During a conversation with Stripe CEO Patrick Collison at Stripe Sessions on May 1, 2026, Sam Altman stated that generative AI has changed the dynamics of startup founding. He noted that the era where technical co-founders were the primary requirement for success has shifted.
Altman explained that founders who possess deep domain expertise and a thorough understanding of their users now have a competitive advantage, even if they lack coding skills. He described this shift as 'the revenge of the idea guys.'
The OpenAI CEO recalled his time leading Y Combinator, admitting that technical talent was previously the most critical factor he looked for when evaluating startups. This priority had historically defined the entrance criteria for the founder class in Silicon Valley.
Altman believes this turnaround is beneficial for the world. He argued that a founder with specific industry knowledge, such as healthcare workflows, is now more valuable than a general full-stack developer capable of building a generic SaaS platform.
