OpenAI CEO Sam Altman outlined two primary risks regarding artificial intelligence during a recent podcast appearance. He suggested that humanity could lose control if it gradually delegates decision-making to autonomous systems that eventually surpass human capabilities, making it impossible to regain authority.
The second risk involves the concentration of power. Altman warned that if a single individual, corporation, or nation gains a monopoly over AI technology, it could lead to dangerous imbalances. He argued that fostering competition among multiple AI laboratories with diverse development paths is a safer approach than relying on a single entity.
Altman noted that concerns over centralized control have prompted some industry figures, including former OpenAI executives and Elon Musk, to leave and establish competing firms. He acknowledged that many developers believe they are the only ones capable of managing the technology safely due to its high stakes.
Despite these warnings, Altman maintains an optimistic outlook on the long-term impact of AI. He emphasized the potential for next-generation models to accelerate fundamental scientific research and drive continuous progress across various fields.
