OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the artificial intelligence industry is capable of developing technology safely without causing significant public harm. He expressed this position during a conversation with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff at the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco.
The discussion on AI safety comes amid ongoing debates among policymakers regarding the necessity of government regulation to prevent AI from escaping human control. These concerns were recently highlighted by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who suggested slowing down development to mitigate potential risks.
Altman emphasized that while OpenAI collaborates with companies like Anthropic and Google DeepMind on safety issues, individual AI firms should maintain the ability to improve their models independently and securely.
