In early June, the Barker Fire Department responded to a fire at the Lake Mariner data center in Somerset, New York, operated by TeraWulf. Firefighters reported that the building lacked functional fire alarms and suppression systems, while three local hydrants were non-operational.
According to TeraWulf, the safety data sheets detailing chemicals in the building were destroyed in the fire. Fire Chief Steve Matisz stated that his crew entered the facility without critical information regarding the materials involved in the blaze.
The Lake Mariner site, a former coal plant, has been used by TeraWulf for Bitcoin mining since 2022. The company is currently transitioning the facility to support artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, targeting a capacity of 500 to 750 MW by the end of 2026.
Current tenants at the campus include Core42 and Fluidstack. Following the incident, discussions were held regarding the installation of additional hydrants and the implementation of improved storage protocols for safety documentation.
No regulatory investigations or follow-up actions regarding the fire have been publicly disclosed. TeraWulf is listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker WULF and continues its strategic shift toward leasing infrastructure for broader computing workloads.
