Roscosmos has completed the Virtual experiment on the International Space Station to study how microgravity affects human vestibular systems and visual tracking. The research aims to understand why spaceflight causes disorientation and motion sickness by disrupting sensory signals.
During the tests, astronauts wear virtual reality headsets and track a moving marker on the screen. The target moves in various directions with different speeds and visual interference, while sensors on the face record precise eye movements.
Data collection occurs in three stages: before, during, and after long-duration space missions. The findings are intended to refine vestibular training programs, which currently help astronauts adapt to the lack of gravity and the loss of spatial orientation.
