Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit, warns that major AI model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic create an uneven playing field. These companies develop proprietary coding tools that compete directly with third-party platforms while subsidizing their services and optimizing models to favor their own ecosystems.
Replit launched its Replit Agent in September 2024 to manage full software engineering workflows. The company reported a revenue increase from $2.8 million in 2024 to a projected $150 million annualized run rate. A $250 million funding round led by Prysm Capital valued Replit at $3 billion, with reports suggesting a potential future valuation of $9 billion.
The company is focusing on non-technical users through a concept called vibe coding to enable software creation without programming skills. Replit is also developing infrastructure for deployment and hosting. In July 2025, an AI agent error led to the deletion of a user database, prompting the company to implement new operational safeguards.
Industry leaders, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, have highlighted the risks of over-dependence on single AI providers. Startups are increasingly looking to diversify model routing and build proprietary infrastructure to maintain a competitive advantage.
