Jane Street reported a trading loss of approximately $15 billion in July 2026, marking its first month of negative revenue since 2016. Despite this, the firm recorded over $40 billion in net trading revenue by mid-August 2026, exceeding its total 2025 result of $39.6 billion.

The losses were driven by concentration risks in the artificial intelligence sector, specifically investments in the hedge fund Situational Awareness and various AI-related equities. During the tech selloff, certain memory and semiconductor stocks experienced declines of nearly 50 percent.

Following these events, the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England are increasing their scrutiny of financial ties between banks and non-bank trading firms. The Bank of England had previously warned in April 2026 against easing capital requirements for such entities.

The Bank of England's July 2026 Financial Stability Report identified vulnerabilities linked to banks' relationships with non-bank institutions. S&P Global Ratings noted that banks hold trillions in aggregate exposure to these firms, citing risks from leverage and concentration.
