A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that 73% of Americans are concerned that AI companies are failing to prevent potential societal harm. The survey, which concluded last Sunday, shows that 39% of respondents view AI as having a negative impact, while only 11% see it as a positive development.
Public confidence in the self-regulation of AI firms remains low, with a majority of participants favoring federal oversight for safety standards. Approximately 69% of those surveyed have followed reports regarding calls from major AI companies to slow down development and enhance safety protocols.
The data reveals that 55% of respondents support a deceleration in AI development, whereas 13% oppose such measures. Furthermore, 73% of Americans prioritize the safe and responsible creation of AI, while 23% believe maintaining a global lead in the technology is more critical.
Despite public pressure and calls for action from various political figures, legislative progress remains limited. Former President Donald Trump has expressed support for rapid AI advancement, and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is in recess until November, stalling immediate regulatory efforts.
