Electrek conducted a survey among its readers regarding liability in accidents involving autonomous vehicles. The poll gathered nearly 3,000 responses, focusing on who should be held accountable when AI-driven taxis fail.
Only about 3.5% of respondents, totaling 102 votes, believe the person in the driver's seat should be held responsible. This group argues that human intervention remains necessary even when using autonomous systems.
Nearly 90% of participants placed the blame on the developers of the AI software. Commenters supporting this view noted that owners often lack the ability to prevent accidents when relying on a black-box system provided by manufacturers.
Some participants suggested that liability should be shared between the vehicle manufacturer and the AI developer. Others argued that the registered owner of the vehicle should be the liable party, similar to how owners are responsible for traditional vehicles.
