The yield on 30-year US Treasury bonds reached 5.33% on August 18, marking the highest level since June 2007. Recent weekly closing rates for these bonds have fluctuated between 5.27% and 5.37%.

Rising yields are driven by annual US fiscal deficits near $2 trillion and a national debt approaching $40 trillion. Additionally, the Consumer Price Index remains at 3.4%, exceeding the Federal Reserve's 2% target.

Life insurers, including Prudential, hold over 85% of their approximately $450 billion portfolios in fixed-income assets and mortgages. These companies are currently reinvesting maturing bonds into new securities with significantly higher yields.

Major insurers have reported quarterly investment income exceeding $4.5 billion. Prudential is leveraging this environment to align its long-duration liabilities with new assets that offer higher returns.

Investors are advised to monitor the pace of portfolio turnover and the trajectory of credit spreads to assess the impact of these market conditions on long-term profitability and default risks.
