Point72 Asset Management manages approximately $58.5 billion in assets. The firm plans to double its capital deployment and headcount in Japan over the coming years, reflecting a trend of Western hedge funds increasing their presence in Tokyo.

The company currently employs about 54 people in Japan, which is 1.3% of its global workforce of roughly 4,100 employees. Doubling this number would increase the Tokyo staff to over 100 people, establishing it as a key outpost outside the US.

In early 2025, Point72 moved its Tokyo office to Otemachi One Tower, nearly doubling its physical space. The firm has operated in Japan since 2011. In August 2025, Shinji Ogawa was hired from JPMorgan to lead the Japan office, starting officially in November 2025.

The expansion follows previous growth targets. In September 2017, the firm aimed to increase staff from 30 to over 60. In 2023, Steve Cohen mentioned plans for roughly 20% headcount growth in Japan during an interview with Nikkei.

About half of the portfolio managers in Japan began their careers through the LaunchPoint program. The firm also utilizes the Point72 Academy for talent development.
