Petrobras, a Brazilian state-owned energy company, has launched two research projects utilizing the Cardano blockchain. These initiatives, developed in collaboration with the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio, focus on tracking sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable Diesel R.
The CS-SAF platform tokenizes environmental attributes of SAF, allowing for the separation of physical fuel usage from emission reduction credits. This system uses the Book-and-Claim model, enabling airlines or passengers to claim environmental benefits without requiring physical delivery of the fuel batch.
The second project tracks the lifecycle of Diesel R, a blend of conventional diesel and renewable materials like plant oils or animal fats. By recording data from production to final use, the blockchain serves as a verification layer for Scope 3 emissions across the supply chain.
This partnership builds upon a previous educational collaboration established in December 2023. At that time, the Cardano Foundation launched blockchain workshops and the Cardano Blockchain Academy, which provided training materials to over 40 000 Petrobras employees.
