Petrobras has launched two blockchain-based applications built on the Cardano network to monitor sustainability data for its sustainable aviation fuel and Diesel R renewable fuel products. The initiative is part of a research partnership with the Ledger Labs division at PUC-Rio, which began in 2023 and expanded into energy-sector research in 2025.
The first application utilizes a Book-and-Claim model to tokenize environmental attributes of sustainable aviation fuel as CS-SAF tokens. This system is designed to prevent double-counting of environmental claims, allowing benefits to be assigned to airlines or passengers. These tokens include metadata compliant with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.
The second application establishes digital checkpoints to track the production, transport, and consumption of Diesel R. This data is intended to assist in Scope 3 emissions reporting. While the Cardano Foundation confirmed the development of these tools, it did not provide specific details regarding the volume of fuel covered or a schedule for wider implementation.
The energy industry is increasingly adopting blockchain for environmental tracking. Shell has operated the Avelia platform since 2022, which has facilitated the distribution of over 84 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel. Additionally, Australia’s Viva Energy entered an agreement with NoviqTech in January to explore similar digital systems for emissions reporting.
