Recent updates to the ChatGPT desktop application for macOS have caused significant performance issues. Users report that the app consumes excessive CPU resources even when idle, leading to increased system temperatures and constant fan activity on Mac devices.

Testing on a MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro 10-core processor showed that the application reached a CPU usage of approximately 150 percent, with temperatures hitting 78 degrees Celsius. This behavior persisted across versions released on October 1, September 26, and September 24.

Stability was restored after rolling back to version 26.917.62051, released on September 23. Following the downgrade, CPU usage dropped to around 30 percent, and temperatures decreased to 60 degrees Celsius, allowing the cooling fans to stop running.

The publication LanDian provides a repository for desktop versions of ChatGPT across macOS, Windows, and Linux platforms. Users experiencing similar technical issues are advised to revert to older builds until the developer releases a patch to address the high resource consumption.
