Pendle Finance has implemented a major update to its tokenomics, reducing annual token emissions by approximately 92% as of mid-September 2026. This shift has brought the annual inflation rate of the PENDLE token down to 0.2%, which is significantly lower than the current inflation rate of Bitcoin.
The protocol introduced the Algorithmic Incentive Model (AIM) in January 2026 to automate incentive distribution based on total value locked and swap fee data. This system replaced the previous manual voting process and exceeded the initial target of a 30% reduction in emissions.
Pendle now allocates up to 80% of its revenue, estimated at $13 million for 2026, toward open-market buybacks of PENDLE tokens. By late September 2026, the protocol had repurchased over 2.68 million tokens, valued at approximately $3.7 million, maintaining a buyback-to-mint ratio of 10:1.
In January 2026, the protocol launched sPENDLE, a liquid staking token that replaced the vePENDLE model. Unlike the previous system, which required multi-year locks, sPENDLE features a 14-day unstaking period. By July 2026, over 100 million tokens were staked, covering 36% of the total supply.
These changes have resulted in a 40% increase in liquidity depth, allowing for larger trades with reduced price impact. The sustainability of the current buyback program depends on the protocol maintaining its annual revenue levels, as fluctuations in yield trading volume could affect the buyback ratio.
