Pearl Abyss, the South Korean game developer, confirmed that its upcoming title Crimson Desert utilizes the proprietary Blackspace engine rather than third-party solutions like Unreal Engine 5. Lead engineer Jin-hwan Kim and graphics department head Jin-ho Yoon stated that relying on external technology would hinder their development speed and core control over the project.
The developers emphasized that the Blackspace engine allows for faster deployment of updates and patches compared to commercial alternatives. By avoiding dependency on external engine update cycles, the team maintains the ability to execute their development roadmap independently. This strategic decision is intended to ensure long-term flexibility for the studio.
Unlike the engine used for Black Desert, which was strictly optimized for MMORPGs, the Blackspace engine was designed from the outset to support multiple platforms and diverse game genres. The studio aims to leverage this architecture for future projects, including potential first-person and third-person shooters, moving beyond the limitations of their previous technology.
Crimson Desert stands out as a rare single-player title that receives continuous content updates and major overhauls, such as a significant story remake. Following recent performance improvements, the studio is preparing the upcoming expansion titled Charting the Unknown, which is expected to introduce substantial new gameplay elements.
