Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, stated in a CNBC interview on September 17, 2026, that frontier AI laboratories face liability risks that private companies cannot manage. He argued that the US government is the only entity capable of absorbing these potential costs, suggesting full nationalization as a practical solution.
Karp previously predicted in June 2026 that full nationalization of frontier AI labs would occur within two years. He dismissed the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act, proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders, which suggested a 50% public ownership stake, as insufficient to address the scale of the issue.
The executive claimed he has been privately warning AI industry leaders for at least six months to implement self-regulation. He advocates for accountability through civil and criminal liability for developers, contrasting his position with the voluntary safety protocols supported by leaders like Dario Amodei and Sam Altman.
Following the interview, Palantir shares increased by approximately 0.6% in a single trading session. Analysts note that Palantir, as a major government technology contractor, could potentially benefit if the government nationalizes AI labs and requires private-sector partners for system deployment.
