Oracle has introduced APEXlang, an abstracted application definition language designed to manage the shift toward machine-generated software. According to Mike Hichwa, senior vice president of software engineering at Oracle, the majority of code in 2026 is machine-generated, marking a permanent shift from human-authored development.
The company is releasing the grammar, skills, and documentation for APEXlang into the public domain. This allows coding agents, such as Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's Codex, to generate the language. Oracle is also collaborating with OpenAI to train models for more efficient generation of APEXlang code.
The APEX engine interprets the generated code and receives monthly patches and updates from Oracle. This design aims to ensure consistency and governance for enterprise applications. By using a compact, abstracted definition rather than sprawling code, the system intends to improve human readability and reduce AI-generated errors.
