Opera has introduced a new security feature for its desktop browser that automatically activates the built-in free VPN when a user connects to public or unencrypted Wi-Fi networks. This update aims to protect users from data leaks and network monitoring in locations like airports, hotels, and cafes.
The new automation is an opt-in feature. Once enabled, the browser uses algorithms to detect untrusted networks and establishes a 256-bit encrypted tunnel. The service operates under a no-log policy, ensuring that browsing history and transmitted data are not stored on company servers.
Opera has been offering a free, unlimited, and no-registration VPN service since 2016. Previously, users had to manually toggle the VPN via the settings menu or the address bar. The new automated switch is currently being rolled out in stages to users in specific regions.
For those who have not yet received the update, the manual activation method remains available. Industry analysts note that integrating automated security mechanisms directly into browser software is becoming a standard approach to addressing the growing threats associated with public network usage.
