OpenAI is in early discussions regarding a new funding round that could value the company at over $1.2 trillion. These talks follow a record-breaking financing round in March, which secured $122 billion in capital at a post-money valuation of $852 billion with support from Amazon, Nvidia, SoftBank, Microsoft, and a16z.

The potential $1.2 trillion valuation represents a 41% increase in less than six months. OpenAI continues to prioritize private capital to meet significant operational expenses, having reported $34 billion in spending last year and a net loss of $38.5 billion in 2025 against $13.07 billion in revenue.

Commercial performance has accelerated, with annualized revenue exceeding $40 billion in July. Growth is attributed to the GPT-5.6 model series, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. Additionally, the company recently acquired the security platform Promptfoo to integrate automated testing into its Frontier enterprise agent.

OpenAI previously conducted a $7 billion tender offer in August, allowing staff to cash out stock at the $852 billion valuation. While the company has filed confidential IPO paperwork, it has delayed a public listing to maintain private funding flexibility and avoid immediate public disclosure obligations.

Market dynamics remain competitive, as rival Anthropic recently raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation. Anthropic is reportedly preparing for a Nasdaq listing, which could occur as early as October. The outcome of these public offerings will likely establish valuation benchmarks for both firms.
