OpenAI has introduced the term compute campus to describe its infrastructure facilities, replacing the traditional data center label in its official communications. The company debuted this new terminology on Monday alongside the launch of its Grid Protectors Program.

The Grid Protectors Program is an initiative designed to manage the impact of AI infrastructure on local power grids. The first site under this program will be located in Effingham County, Georgia, with the company pledging to cover costs associated with its energy consumption.

OpenAI claims that its new compute campuses differ from older data centers by offering greater flexibility in power demand. The company used the term compute campus significantly more frequently than data center in its 900-word announcement regarding the new initiative.

The rebranding effort coincides with broader industry concerns regarding the environmental and resource impact of AI infrastructure. Critics and activist groups have characterized the name change as a public relations strategy that fails to address the underlying issues of energy usage and community impact.

The shift in terminology follows similar industry trends, as companies like Anthropic have previously made public commitments to fund grid upgrades and invest in community projects. OpenAI did not provide a comment regarding its decision to adopt the new nomenclature.
