OpenAI has recruited three former executives from the subscription platform Patreon to spearhead its new creator-focused product strategy. Sam Yam, the co-founder and former technology chief of Patreon, announced he will lead the Creator Product division at OpenAI. He is joined by former Patreon product head Drew Rowny and engineering head Shannon Ma, both of whom departed the company recently.
The new team is expected to focus on developing tools for creators and their communities. Sam Yam indicated that early access to these developments may be shared soon, specifically pointing toward the upcoming OpenAI DevDay scheduled for September 29th. Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has teased that a significant announcement is expected within the current week.
This hiring move signals a potential shift for OpenAI into the creator monetization sector, leveraging the expertise of individuals who helped build the subscription-based creator economy. For Patreon, the loss of these key leaders follows a period of corporate restructuring, which included a 20 percent reduction in staff announced in January and a planned overhaul of user features.
