OpenAI has released a blog post advocating for the United States to lead international efforts in establishing global standards for artificial intelligence. The company emphasizes the necessity of creating technical frameworks to address potential risks associated with advanced AI models, ensuring that development remains safe and beneficial on a global scale.
The proposed standards focus on defining specific AI-related events that require reporting, fostering international cooperation, and improving access to computing power for research. OpenAI suggests leveraging existing institutions, such as the US Department of Commerce’s AI Safety and Innovation Center, to coordinate these efforts across different nations.
The company also addressed the risks of autonomous systems, specifically advising against fully autonomous recursive self-improvement. OpenAI stated that AI should not be permitted to modify its own code or enhance its capabilities without human intervention until safety can be fully guaranteed.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is scheduled to address the United Nations Security Council this Wednesday to discuss the intersection of artificial intelligence and international security. Additionally, US Treasury Secretary Bessent recently proposed a notification mechanism for AI incidents that could impact national security.
