OpenAI unveiled Astra for Law on September 17, a specialized configuration of the GPT-6 Astra model designed for law firms and legal tech developers. The system integrates a comprehensive index of case law, statutes, and court regulations, developed in partnership with the non-profit Free Law Project.

The platform prioritizes data security through two specific mechanisms: zero data retention for API users and an eyes-off mode for ChatGPT Enterprise clients, which restricts OpenAI staff from accessing user queries. These features distinguish the tool from standard versions of ChatGPT.

Internal testing on a set of 200 legal questions demonstrated a 40 percent improvement in accuracy compared to the base GPT-6 Astra model. Furthermore, the configuration identified 24 percent more relevant case law decisions and increased the retrieval of relevant court opinion fragments by 54 percent.

Astra for Law launches with an ecosystem of 26 partner plugins. Access is currently limited to selected law firms via the Trusted Access program for ChatGPT and Codex, with plans for a broader API release. The launch follows recent legal-focused product releases from Google, Thomson Reuters, and Anthropic.
