OpenAI is currently in preliminary discussions regarding a private funding round that could value the company at $1.2 trillion. These talks were initiated by investors rather than the company itself, and the valuation figure remains subject to change as negotiations progress.
The proposed valuation represents a 41% increase from the $852 billion mark established during a funding round in March, which raised $122 billion. Despite this growth, the company does not anticipate reaching a break-even point until 2030, having spent $34 billion on model training last year.
CEO Sam Altman has officially ruled out a public listing in 2026, citing the need for further progress on AI safety and alignment protocols. While the company filed a confidential IPO prospectus in June, CFO Sarah Friar previously indicated a potential timeline for 2027.
OpenAI reported that its annualized revenue surpassed $40 billion last month, marking a 20% increase. Meanwhile, competitor Anthropic has reached a run rate of $65 billion as of July and currently holds a valuation of $965 billion.
