OpenAI introduced its AI personal assistant, dots, at a developer event in late September. The product evolved from the company's previous coding tools, including the Codex app released earlier this year and the ChatGPT Work platform designed for software engineers.
The assistant functions as a persistent agent that operates in the background without requiring constant user prompts. It performs proactive tasks such as monitoring calendar conflicts and analyzing system outages, with the goal of anticipating user needs through a continuous conversation.
The system utilizes a feature called proactive research, which periodically reviews user data and conversation history to suggest helpful actions. OpenAI provides privacy controls that allow users to disable model training and manage resource access, though current settings lack granular configuration.
OpenAI is currently engaged in discussions with payment processors regarding the potential for AI agents to handle financial transactions. While the company aims to scale the technology, it is coordinating these developments with the broader ecosystem to address infrastructure and business integration challenges.
