The 2026 OpenAI DevDay event in San Francisco was met with significant protests outside the Fort Mason venue. More than 15 organizations, including the Tech Workers Coalition and the Bay Resistance, participated in the demonstration to voice concerns regarding the AI industry.
The protesters highlighted issues related to the environmental impact of data centers and the concentration of power within the AI sector. Participants wore cardboard robot costumes and carried props while displaying banners with slogans such as People Over AI to emphasize their message.
A key demand presented by the activists involves the placement of AI infrastructure. The groups are calling for a mandatory safety buffer, requesting that all new AI data centers be located at least 100 miles away from residential areas to mitigate potential risks to local communities.
