OpenAI introduced reusable cloud environments for its Codex coding agent during the DevDay conference. These environments allow developers to save project configurations and dependencies, enabling consistent work across different devices. The system connects to GitHub repositories, automatically drafting installation scripts and performing startup checks based on detected software versions.
Once an environment is published, each task runs on its own virtual machine, maintaining progress even when the developer's computer is inactive. Changes remain associated with the task, allowing users to resume work from a browser or mobile device. Dependency caches are preserved during background refreshes to keep repositories updated.
The platform supports shared configurations for teams, where administrators manage editing permissions within ChatGPT workspaces. Security for credentials is handled through environment variables and network secrets, which use proxies to inject values. Internet access is restricted to common package registries by default, though developers can adjust these settings.
OpenAI also debuted Codex Security Cloud, which scans GitHub repositories on a schedule to prepare fixes while local machines are offline. By default, task states remain recoverable for up to seven days. Currently, the service does not support GitLab, self-hosted GitHub Enterprise Server, or direct computer and browser interaction within the cloud environments.
