OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to address the United Nations Security Council this Wednesday. The session, held during the annual UN General Assembly in New York, focuses on the risks and governance of artificial intelligence.

Altman intends to position himself as a pragmatic centrist. He advocates for the establishment of global AI safety standards that balance innovation with responsible development, aiming to prevent the concentration of power within a few organizations.

Dario Amodei, CEO of competitor Anthropic PBC, will participate in the meeting via video link. The discussion follows recent industry concerns regarding AI safety, which were highlighted by the resignation of an Anthropic researcher earlier this month.

Regarding regulatory frameworks, OpenAI stated it does not endorse a specific international body. Instead, the company supports basic safety standards overseen by democratic mechanisms and suggests that existing international agencies could facilitate these discussions.

Altman previously proposed a US-led global mechanism in July and expanded on this vision in a recent blog post. OpenAI representatives noted that individual nations should retain the ability to implement their own regulatory approaches through local democratic processes.
