OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to speak at the United Nations Security Council on September 23. The discussion will focus on the risks of artificial intelligence, taking place during the UN General Assembly's annual debate in New York.

Altman intends to advocate for the creation of global AI safety standards. He positions himself as a pragmatic centrist, aiming to balance the need for safety regulations with the necessity of maintaining innovation and preventing market concentration among a few dominant firms.

Dario Amodei, head of the rival company Anthropic, will participate in the meeting via video link. The event follows recent concerns regarding AI safety, which were highlighted by the resignation of an Anthropic researcher earlier this month.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the dangers of AI on September 22, calling for international cooperation. Altman previously proposed the establishment of a US-led global organization for AI governance in July and further detailed this vision in a blog post earlier this week.
