OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to brief the United Nations Security Council on artificial intelligence next week. The session, focused on AI and international security, is set to take place on September 23 in New York during the UN General Assembly.
Altman plans to address the necessity of international coordination and the establishment of shared safety standards. He will also outline steps OpenAI is taking to ensure that the global population benefits from the ongoing development of artificial intelligence technologies.
The meeting is convened by France, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for September. French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot will preside over the session to discuss the risks of malicious misuse and the urgency of responsible AI development.
Diplomatic sources indicate that Anthropic may also send a high-level representative to the meeting, though participation remains unconfirmed. The UN Security Council previously held its first discussion regarding the risks associated with artificial intelligence in 2023.
