OpenAI has appointed Uday Ruddarraju as the company's first Chief Technology Officer of Compute. He assumed this new position in July 2026, exactly one year after joining the organization as Head of Compute and Infrastructure.
Ruddarraju previously led infrastructure engineering at xAI. During his tenure there, he contributed to the development of the Colossus supercomputer, a cluster featuring over 250,000 GPUs used for large-scale AI training.
In his new role, Ruddarraju oversees data centers, GPU clusters, and hardware manufacturing. OpenAI aims to consolidate these areas into a unified compute framework to scale its infrastructure capabilities.
Before his time at xAI, Ruddarraju held engineering leadership roles at Robinhood for nearly six years and spent over five years at eBay. His career began with an internship at Amazon Web Services.
